Foster Parent Required Training

ALL Trainings require a certificate of completion OR a summary to be submitted to your Foster Care Licensing Worker. You can submit an online Study Form here.

Training Required Before You Can Be Licensed

  • 2 hours of Mental Health education

Specific Training Requirements

Requirements for educational support are as follows:

Years Licensed Education Hours Required
0 – 1 year 18 hours
1 – 5 years 15 hours
5 + years 12 hours

Annual Trainings:

  • 1 hour of Mental Health 
  • Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Training (1 hour required annually but not at the time of initial licensing):
  • Mandated Reported Training (required annually)

Education Requirements for Specific Populations

 When Statement of Intended Use includes:   Specific Education Required 

Children from 0 to 6 years old Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) and Abusive Head Trauma (AHT) every 5 years
Children from 0 to 8 years old 1+ hours of approved Child and Restraint Systems education (C.A.R.S.) every 5 years
Youth ages 18 to 21 Maltreatment of Vulnerable Adult Education annually – required only when a youth 18 years or older is in the home

Child Passenger Restraint (“C.A.R.S”, required every 5 years and if caring for children up to age 8):

Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (Every 5 years, with youth in care ages 0-6):
